so where have i been for the last couple of days...

the great city of tent.topia was created on thursday, april 14, 2005
and the cities sovereignty was threatened on friday, april 15 @ 10am

after agressive negotiations the faculty and the students decided to agree to disagree (though removing the power cables running from the inside to the outside and not using the grill) [both of which we return to regular business hours when the faculty is away]

Why the tents and tell us a bit more about what you are constructing there

the tents are b/c we are sleeping on the balcony every night rather than going back to our apartments/houses (saving 15-30min per trip twice in a day)
ie: i LIVE there

there is a 4-H camp and we are designing a environmental educational center
we have to have a chemistry/biology lab, fossil lab, 3 classrooms, wildlife room, weather room, library, auditorium for 200 ppl, offices, telescope tower, greenhouse, shop, mech/elec room

http://web.utk.edu/~btrusty/cdretc/butter.jpg
here is a 3d rendering it

north is to the upper right corner
there are classrooms along the inner courtyard pond
there is a greenhouse in the middle of the south elevation (the glass roof)
i the radial section to the right is the lobby space, with the main door being to the right (just left of the smaller pool on the east wall)
and the auditorium for 200ppl is on the far right; the upper white triangle part of the auditorium roof is a gallery that runs the length of the auditorum
oh, and that big glass shaft on the side of the courtyard (as thought it is coming out of the water, is the telescope tower)

the basswood and cardboard/chipboard model (in orig. post) is a structural detail of the lobby and the auditorium

Very impressive what you are designing. Will it be built? I cannot imagine people dossing in tents so that they can save on travelling time. (Thats probably why I live opposite my work place. It takes me 4 minutes from frontdoor to desk.

Keep us informed how you are getting on with the centre, as it looks (as I said before) very impressive :wow:

dude i thought that was the queue for revenge of the sith lol. The work looks good, pretty hardcore sleeping outside to save that much time, so the lecturers wouldn't let you sleep inside?

well i dont know about other people's classes, but ECS (see: books currently being read post) is cancel'd next week, and materials is devoted to 2 of our required drawings (so pretty much cancel'd/devoted to studio work) and i dont have any other classes this semester (on account of taking structures during the summer rather than now like all the other ppl)

so yea, im here 24/7 for nothing but a 6 credit hour class (that meets for 12hrs a week and we use more than double that (24+ hours) for work out of class (though im efficiently bum and do about the same amount of time in as out during the rest of the semester... till final time)

though, sadly, the 24/7 (or 9 this semester) that is spent in the building isnt all work, about 50% is pure work; 25% is fuxking around; and 25% is wondering why you are still working @ 5am and the birds are making noises for no apparent reason (other than its 5am)... or trying to figure out why what you are doing isnt working or the paradox that the last 2 hours were just wasted completely (for whatever reason)... that and the reglar reduction in work quality as the amount if time increases over 18-25 hours for a given sitting and when it hits 35-40 hours and your eyes are starting to get sore and hurt.

oh, and the
after agressive negotiations the faculty and the students decided to agree to disagree was in regards to this email we received on friday morning...

With the favorable weather forecast for the next few days, it appears that
tent city has been erected and inhabitated by some very dedicated students on
the third floor terrace outside of the studios 301 and 307. We understand that
the semester is rapidly coming to a close and that everyone is concerned about
getting their work done, but moving into the building to be closer to your
work presents the potential for some very serious problems, i.e. the charcoal
grille, extension cords from the interior exposed to the elements, the
electrical equipment in operation outside, basic sanitation operations -
garbage removal, etc.

We (the administration) have been informed that this type of use is a definite
NO-NO for university facilities and that it needs to be evacuated and
completely removed forthwith - by sundown today! Please don't give the guys in
the black hats, or us in the white ones, any reason to call in the bulldozers.
Thank you for your cooperation and have faith. The time draws nigh when you
will be able to engage in your frivolities and have your rest, as well.

and ill try to get a copy of the reply we sent back to them
