Default CPU socket basics

Part one of a very good article on CPU sockets, and their support CPUs/specifications. This first part looks at Intel, good for me as i have very little hands on experience with Intels CPUs.

Quote:
Although there are currently only two main players in the CPU market, AMD and Intel, the number of choices is still enough to make the typical consumer's head spin. Each manufacturer has a few different models to promote, and many of these models can be found in a few different form factors (namely, the "sockets" to which they connect) that exclude interchangeability.

This two-part series of Tech Tips will look at a few details of each of the currently-supported CPU (Central Processing Unit) sockets and how they are all similar and different from one to another. First up, we will take a look at the CPU sockets supporting modern Intel processors.

Think i might save this article and attach to this thread at some point, could be worth keeping around.

here's the AMD socket guide:

well if that was supposed to be the "complete" intel article - he forgot p-m, which is becoming an ever popular low-power server option (not just for laptops anymore)

not sure about P-M, if they're anything like the Athlon-M they'll use the same socket as their desktop equivilent (socket A). But i really have no idea for intel. Anyone know?

Added the AMD part of the article.
