Cool The Fridge is a Phoenix

Team,

In May of 2006, one of my Buddies at work asked me to help him with a new box. He's really keen on having only good tech inside (bragging rights) so we spec'd it out. (I don't know why is Jim telling us all this crap... I'll get to it...)

We went with an Antec P180 Mid Tower Case, which is constucted with insulated panels like a Fridge => hence it's name and that of it's successors... It's very, very quite. In my opinion still the best case out there!

Installed in the case:

1- Asus P5N32 SLI Deluxe Motherboard
2- Intel Pentium D 950 3.4 GHz S775 800 Mhz with 4 MB Cache
3- Antec True Power II 550 Watt PSU
4- 2 X Kingston 1024 MB PC4200 533 MHz DDR2 RAM
5- Panasonic Floppy Drive
6- BenQ1655 16X Lightscribe DVD+/- RW Burner
7- LG SuperMulti DVD Rewriter GSA-H54N
8- 2 X 250 GB SATA2 Segate Hard Drives

Eventually it had some misc. stuff => a couple Sliders with more HDs, and a Video Card, Asus TV Tuner Card, and a Pinnacle Video Capture Card.

We finished configuring it at my office in my spare time. It was a great Box but the Motherboard died prematurely last June. We took it apart and got it ready to send to Asus. My Buddy checked out his home but couldn't find the Reciept. We kept bugging him all summer, and fall. In about September we started Fridge 3 (see http://forum.optical-edge.net/showth...ghlight=Fridge for Fridge 2 see http://forum.optical-edge.net/showth...ghlight=Fridge ) and he started asking me if I wanted to build a new Box for me from the reminants of The Fridge.

So after a couple of months, just after my Motherboard died (see http://forum.optical-edge.net/showthread.php?t=7749 ) he asked me again so I said, "Make me a Deal. What are you wanting to part with, and what do you want for it?"

He wanted to keep Items 6, 7, & 8 as well as the misc. stuff and trade all 1-5. He asked me to supply a Western Digital 250 SATA2 Portable Notebook HD in a Case that connects via USB. They had just come into Costco, and so that night I bought it for ~$160 and gave it to him the next day and took the debris home that afternoon from work.

The next day (Saturday), I'm out and about and I get a Text message from him (I hate Text messages on my Cell phone but that's another story...) saying his wife just found the receipt for the MB. So on Monday I ask him what he wants to do. He says he doesn't think I'd want to wait for the RMA to return the MB and I said., "Make me a Deal", what do you want.

He said he didn't want money but wanted to get 2 X 2 Gig Corsair DDR2 Memory for Fridge 3 so XP 64 would have 6 Gigs Total. It was on Sale @ NCIX, with rebate, it would net at $106. I said you buy it and I'll give you $106 but I'll want the BenQ DVD Burner as well. He agreed.

A couple days later he said he'd spec'd different faster Corsair RAM and the Net was now $135. I said okay but now I want the LG Burner & Asus TV Tuner. He said ok but he wants me to try to recover the photos and stuff off the 2 HDs as they were configured as a Striped RAID. I agreed.

So the Motherboard is supposed to ship back tomorrow => Ground from Indanapolis => who ships small stuff on the ground!! We shipped it Fedex Air to them!! I asked what they did and the clerk said they don't get the report until after it shipped. She did advise it could be repaired, or replaced with rebult or new. I'll just have to wait.

My buddy is looking hard at doing 2 of XFX GeForce 8800GTS 650MHZ 512MB 1.94GHZ DDR3 PCI-E Dual DVI-I HDCP HDTV Video Cards (or similar). If so I'll grab his "old" nVidia 7900 Card. We'll see

I'll keep you posted as to how this works out.

Cool Re: The Fridge is a Phoenix

Today,

My Buddy asked (via e mail under the title Indian Giver ) if he could get one of the DVD burners back, as one he had at home (not in Fridge 3) died last night. He also wants the Asus card to try in Fridge 3 under XP 64. Of course I said yes .

Cool Re: The Fridge is a Phoenix

I thought I'd update where I am now with this PC as it's now somewhat complete (as if one of my Boxes is ever finished).

I bought a Plextor PX-716 DVD Burner from my Buddy when he sold Fridge 2 to replace the LG, and I put in. I also have dropped in a couple 320 Gig Segates and a couple of SATA Drawers that are awesome for file transfers - booting to separate Operating Systems - etc..

My misses (and sons) got me a XFX nVidia 8800 GTS 512 Meg Aplha dog edition Video card for my Birthday in March. (I used another Buddy's nVidia 6600 GT card for a while to get the box going)

So for the moment I'm content. But I guess time will tell.

Cool Re: The Fridge is a Phoenix - now Dead again!!

Update =>Friday June 13, 2008

Well today is not a lucky day for the Fridge. Today a request for another Warranty RMA for the Asus P5N32 SLI Deluxe Motherboard went in to Asus.

Yesterday I tried to Boot the Fridge and I got no video. So naturally I assumed it was the XFX nVidia 8800 GTS 512 Meg Alpha Dog Edition Video card I got for my Birthday in March. So I quickly borrowed an nVidia 6600GT from a Buddy => and tried it => to no avail.

Then I remembered I didn't hear any "Beep Codes" when booting. Then the long process of removing all the Bits and pieces until there was a single stick of Ram, a video card, and the boot hard drive. Still no boot up, or beep codes. Then the Removal and test of the MB by removing video card, then HD, then RAM => still not a peep!

So out comes those bits and then the MB power and control connections => finally the Motherboard. I strip off the CPU cooler and then the CPU. Nothing looks burned or loose. So into the Anti Static bag headed for Fedex.

I expect it'll be a month before I see a P5N32 SLI Deluxe Motherboard again. In the mean time I'm pounding away on a Box I put together for my wife just in case her PC ever packs it in.

(Her PC is a 10 year old dinosaur that just won't quit! An Asus P2B with a P2 400 Intel Chip. She does email and surfs the web just about every night. She laughs at me and my tales of woe )

This is an Asus P4B533 Motherboard with an Intel 1.8 Ghz P4 and 756 Megs of DDR Ram. I moved over the BenQ Lightscribe 16X DVD Burner just so I could burn a disk or two if needed. Then I installed SP3 and the latest 6 updates, migrated over my email, some data, and favorites and I'm up and running in a couple hours.

Of course I can't do the video editing as there is not enough hosrpower here, or hard drive space. But I'll get by until I hear from Asus.

Aren't Computers Fun?

Damn, that sucks. Doubly so as I bought the same board for my box.

Cool The Fridge is a Phoenix

It's been a while so here's the update on the Box.

Asus sent a different Motherboard back in mid July and I installed it. It booted up first time so it seems okay.

I decided to maker the Fridge quieter so I've been on a mission changing out the various Antec Fans with Scythe units as I find them on Sale. A couple weeks back I changed out the Intel CPU fan / heatsink for a Scythe Zipang monster.

It's a great unit => very efficient and quiet (but HUGE). Now I think the majority of the remaining noise is either from the Antec True Power II 550 Watt PSU's Fan and / or XFX nVidia 8800 GTS 512 Meg Video card as everything else has been changed. I've enable Q-fan in Bios and it makes a big difference for the CPU Fan and one Case Fan it can control.

It appears the Plextor PX-716 DVD Burner is dying as I get errors Burning DVDs so it's probably headed for the recycle bin.

As it turns to Fall here maybe I'll have more time inside to tinker as the weather gets less hospitable. I have some DVD Authoring (Home Movies) that I'm behind on, and they take lots of time to get right. That'll really be a test for the Fridge.

Cool Re: The Fridge is a Phoenix

November Update:

Everything was okay until a little while after the Zipang went in. Then the Fridge acted up and would only boot about half the time. I finally deduced it was a Bad 1 Gig Stick of Kingston DDR2 Ram.

So in a fit of madness I bought 4 gigs (2 Sticks => yes Windows XP only sees ~3.25 Gigs of it.) of Corsair TWIN2X4096-64004HDX G. I had to tweak the Asus P5N32-SLI Deluxe as it wouldn't automatically Boot at all with 2 sticks in. The Ram Voltage needs to go to 2.1v.

That solved about 50% of the problem but the Box still hung at boot from time to time. After a while it got progressively worse to the point where I couldn't stand it anymore and didn't want to wait for months on another RMA from Asus so (in another fit of madness) I bought a new P5N32-E SLI last week.

Even though this seems like it should be the same as the "Deluxe" version it's really a clone of the most expensive Motherboard Asus ever sold (when released) an Asus Striker Motherboard =>less a couple silly pushbuttons, an LCD Boot readout screen, and an esata port on the backplane. (I put a Striker Motherboard into Fridge 3 for my Buddy a while ago at his insistance => he always goes top drawer. It's about bragging rights .)

Now with the P5N32-E SLI installed, the Fridge it works great! It controls all the Case Fans as well as the CPU fan. It's now the quietest Box I've ever owned.

On the downside, I had to drop 2 IDE Hard Drives (one was extra storage and the other a Vista boot that I rarely experimented with lately) as there is only one IDE Bus and I've got 2 DVD Burners plugged into it. I may put in a couple SATA drives in later, but the Drawers make the installation of extra drives mute. Besides they age faster as they are energised even when not in use.

I haven't got around to RMA the Kingston Ram or Asus P5N32-SLI Deluxe as I'm still tweaking things and making Ghost backups (just in case); it's keeping me busy.

If you stopped using an impact gun to affix motherboards to the case they might last longer...

Cool Re: The Fridge is a Phoenix

The Plextor PX-716a decided to make more coasters than usuable Disks so I retired it a couple weeks back.

I got a real deal ($18.50 USF - $23 Canadian) on a Samsung SH-S223F 22X SATA Burner so it's out with the old, and in with the new.
